Gessner Road Widening
STATUS FLASH
Project Status as of:
Monday, August 24, 2009
Updates:

The project is in Phase 4, the final phase, of the road widening and drainage improvement project.  Phase 4 includes the installation of the median islands, sidewalks, and the landscape/streetscape amenities.  The contractor’s scheduled completion is mid-November.

Improvements:

Included on the draft 2010-2014 CIP, this designated right-turn lane was accepted as a change order by JD Abrams, the contractor for the Gessner Road Project, as additional work.  Construction is underway and the completion will be in concert with the Gessner Widening Project.

STATUS FLASH
Project Status as of:
Tuesday, March 24, 2009
Accomplishments:

Phase two of the three phase project is nearly complete.  The contractor, JD Abrams, is pouring new concrete in the middle of the road between what is currently the north and south bound lanes from IH-10 to Barryknoll.  Abrams began the phase two by first completing the intersections followed by the rest of the road.  Phase two is projected to be complete by April 30.

Upcoming Tasks:

The upcoming tasks for April include beginning phase three of the Gessner project.  This includes rebuilding the west side of Gessner or what are also the south bound lanes from IH-10 to Barryknoll.  The change to phase three will also involve a traffic switch beginning March 30.   The south bound traffic will be moved from the existing pavement onto the newly constructed pavement (poured during phase two) in the middle of Gessner.  Phase three of the construction is scheduled to be complete by August 31, 2009.

STATUS FLASH
Project Status as of:
Friday, January 23, 2008
Accomplishments:

All utility conflicts for phase one has been resolved.  This includes the relocation of the Sears’ fire vault and correcting the uncommon slope of the sanitary sewer near the Target entrance.  As a result, all of the box culverts have been installed.   The last sections of concrete will be poured ahead of the phase two traffic switch.

Upcoming Tasks:
Pour concrete where the last box culverts were installed at the location of relocated Sears’ fire vault and the resolved sanitary sewer conflict.   Phase two traffic switch is scheduled to begin February 4.  Northbound traffic will be shifted on the newly expanded pavement on the east side of Gessner.  The contractor will begin road work in the middle of Gessner (the current north bound lanes) from IH-10 to Barryknoll.

STATUS FLASH
Project Status as of:
Monday, November 24, 2008
Overview:
The Gessner Widening Improvement Project is a joint effort between the TIRZ 17 Redevelopment Authority and the Texas Department of Transportation to improve traffic flow and drainage south of IH-10.  The improvements will include the addition of a fourth lane in each direction and the installation of two eight-foot by five-foot box culverts to replace the single smaller pipe that conveys the rainfall runoff to drainage channel W151.   Additional turning movements will be added in both the north and south bound direction along with eight foot wide sidewalks and enhanced landscape and streetscape.  Construction started in June with the removal of the medians and installation of temporary traffic poles and signals.  As part of phase one of the project, the north bound traffic has been switched onto temporary pavement where the medians were once located.  This is necessary to allow for the demolition of the east side lanes for water main, manhole and storm sewer installation.  The project completion date is set for late 2009.
Accomplishments:
All prior waterline issues have been resolved and the new lines are now in service.  Crews from the contractor, JD Abrams, are advancing toward IH-10 by installing the 8 x 5 box culverts north of the sky bridge and a section south of the Olive Garden which had been skipped due to a water line issue.  Workers have poured the last part of concrete at the main entrance of the Memorial City Mall.
Upcoming tasks November 24-28, 2008:

The upcoming tasks for the week of November 24 – 28 include the re-opening of the main entrance to the Memorial City Mall.  The north bound installation of box culverts will continue toward the Target store entrance.  Immediately after the Thanksgiving holidays the Target entrance will be temporarily closed for approximately two to three weeks for the box culvert installation and the pouring of new concrete.

Accomplishments:
New concrete has been poured from Barryknoll to the section of Gessner parallel to the Olive Garden Restaurant.  Another 300 feet of new concrete has also been laid from IH-10 south toward Target.  More than half of the box culvert installation is complete.  The new 12-inch water line has been installed and the contractor is currently waiting on the results of tests conducted by the City of Houston before it can proceed with installing the remaining box culverts.   Approval of the water line will also allow the contractor to connect the Memorial Hermann Hospital to the new service.
Upcoming tasks November 3-7, 2008:

JD Abrams will pour the two driveways for the Sears Automotive store.  The contractor expects to receive a passing grade from the City of Houston on the chlorination test on the new 12-inch water line.  This allows for the connection of the surrounding businesses to the new water line and the further installation of the box culverts on the east side of Gessner toward IH-10.

Accomplishments:
Construction on the east side of Gessner is marching north toward IH-10.  As of this week, nearly half of the storm sewer/box culvert installation is complete.  The installation of the 12-inch water line is complete.  This is significant because it allows for the completion of the box culvert installation.  New concrete has been poured from Barryknoll to the section of Gessner parallel to the Olive Garden Restaurant and at the intersection of Gessner at IH-10.
Upcoming tasks October 20-24, 2008:

The upcoming tasks for the week of October 20-24 include; the testing of the new 12-inch waterline, activating the new 12-inch waterline, install new sections of box culvert on the east side of Gessner, followed by more paving.

Accomplishments August 25-29, 2008:
The contractor, JD Abrams, is progressing north on Gessner from Barryknoll to IH-10.  The Barryknoll intersection at Gessner is scheduled to be complete and all lanes reopened by Tuesday, August 26.  Currently, Barryknoll is open to two-way traffic, but one-lane in each direction from Gessner to Plantation.  Storm sewer installation has reached the mall entrance at Kingsride and will continue north on the east side for the next month and a half.  The pavement placement crew will begin working the week of August 25 at the mall entrance at Kingsride.  The target date for this portion of the paving process is scheduled for September 12.  New waterline installation across Gessner at three separate locations is underway.  The work is being completed during the overnight hours.  Prior lane closures for waterline installation on the west side of Gessner were shifted from daytime to nighttime hours which considerably improved the flow of traffic.

Accomplishments August 4-11, 2008:
The contractor, JD Abrams, has completed and poured concrete on the second big manhole on the northbound side of Gessner at Barryknoll.  This accomplishment is significant because it’s another step to the completion of the intersection.  By Friday, August 8, Barryknoll is scheduled to be reopened for two-way traffic, one-lane in each direction.  Storm sewer installation will continue northward on the northbound side for the next month and a half.  New waterline installation across Gessner is scheduled to begin the week of August 4-8 during the overnight hours.  Traffic control procedures will be in place because of lane closures.  Prior lane closures for waterline installation on the west side of Gessner were shifted from daytime to nighttime hours which considerably improved the flow of traffic.

Upcoming Tasks July 21-25, 2008:

For the next several weeks crews will continue installing the double box culverts for storm sewer improvements and continue the water line work.

STATUS FLASH
Project Status as of:
Monday, June 16, 2008
Accomplishments:
Preparations have been underway this week in preparation for the physical groundbreaking on Gessner Road.  Crews have been installing temporary traffic signals, relocating utilities and saw cutting the pavement.  Traffic will soon be shifted to the west side of Gessner for the installation of the larger storm sewer on the east side.
Upcoming Tasks:
According to the contractor JD Abrams, the traffic shift is expected to take place the week of June 23rd.  Before then, the contractor hopes to have the medians removed and the temporary asphalt in place for the north bound traffic.  North and southbound traffic will both have two lanes. The storm sewer installation will begin at the corner of Gessner and Barryknoll and proceed toward IH-10.
